It is great to see how educationists focus on understanding the ways and techniques to motivate YL nowadays. However motivation and success will at one point be parallel as this differs with cultures, beliefs and the amount of input into the learner.
What motivates a person to study at all? Why do we learn new things? I believe the answer to these questions will be becuase we grow in time.
But YL don't underatand this concepts of time or evolution. Emma Ushioda in her research points out key facts on how motivation is derieved over time in what she says learners do not learn an L2 becuase of specific goals but rather becuase of the positive experience they have enjoyed over time. This type of learner mirrors our situation with i2 where we mostly deal with early leaners who don't understand the reason for studying the L2 but rather are motivated by activities and the fun of the language by the teacher. In this case making the classroom a comfortable learning environment to the YL is a great tool of motivation which will in turn potray the positive nature of the subject creating a sustained interest in the language in the YL and not just the fun games and activities we perform.
Unfortunately, Dörnyie, in his L2 motivtion self system fails to understand how concerned YL of L2 are with even their personal opinions on choices of clothes or colors and even a culture as a whole. Even a 4 years old kid can have an Ideal L2 self and not just the ought-to-be self as in his theory. This can go a long way to demotivate most of the teachers while in the teaching environment since they understand that kids don't have ideal selves and so why spend all this time on them. it should be uncovered that Our kids have developed interest in the L2 in this case English language not just with time but becuase they wish to achieve different goals that is linked with growing up into adulthood and life. It is most important therefore to use the best methods we can afford to teach the kids not just to motivate them but to build the relationship they have with the language and the culture they seek to embrace in the light coming future.
However, in relation to the intrapersonal intelligence build in YL and even adults it should be remembered that YL will always use the L2 in a most beneficial and motivating way to suit their own goals be it short term and also are willing to make the classroom environment a warm and accepted domain for mistakes and corrections. What more can be this great a motive as to know you are free to make mistakes and learn from them. this will build the best experience to study L2 and will be a great motivational tool to be used by the teacher to create a better results when giving out lessons and activites in a classroom environment.
