At the end of the 20th century, Robert Gardner and Wallace Lambert develop a study on learning language. Their theory: motivation to learn a language depends on the learner's attitude toward the L2 community.
A high interest is a culture, as integrative orientation, help to communicate and to learn.
This theory based on social influence received critics: nothing mentioned course's content, learners personal motivation or student's age.
This changed L2 motivation researches. Dorney discerned here a switch between the ethnolinguistic influence theory and the learning context theory.
During the 80-s, researchers as Deci and Ryan focused more on situated cognitif factors, so on learning context.
The Task Based learning by Rod Ellis, defines the task impact as a key to learn a language. Lee Dickson believes that self motivation and it own control on learning could provide better results.
Ema Ushiadu based her research on the good influence of positive experience during classes. This theory is reinforced by Tan Bee Tin's researches and TESOL MA students' interview which has proved positive learning experience effects more than simply personal goals. The L2 motivational self system by Dorney shows that learners's projections as L2 speakers motivate a lot. The Ought to L2 self treat learner's goal depending on other's expectation. Different theory of situated cognitive period are, for him, partly right.
Sybille Heinzmann proves that young learners can project themselves to be motivated but nit for early young learners. Tin's study prove that learners are sometimes influenced by others to find motivation.
Curriculum, positive feed back, content and teachers are able to change the learner motivation according to Ushiadu'study. Teacher are responsible in a way.
Julia Lo and Fiona Hyland 2007 find a different approach: prove that focusing on self expression and personal learners'interest to practice english really help.
For me, this makes sense. A immediate result is important for young learners. Have fun or need to communicate absolutely living in L2 community seems the good reason. Obviously enjoying language and communication helps more. Teachers are also responsible and can make a difference.
