The attitudes of the pupils towards learning English is fluid. In chapter 2 it’s saying its connected to their teacher, teaching methods, parents opinion, other students around them, their age and the need of using the language. All true but the most important thing of all is them gaining confidents in themselves and in using a new language. In chapter 2 is written that perhaps the liking of learning is contributing to there sence of confidents. I think it’s the other way around. By gaining confidents the learning process is highly influenced. And will make them like learning more because of there own positive motivation. With a constant doubt about yourself and about the new language there process will be less successful or even can get stuck. Of course the influence of others around you like the parents, other students and the teacher does contribute in a good or bad way. But their own inner view on all these factors is the key to positive or negative results. For us as teachers we can make the biggers differents in giving the student a positive experience and keeping them on track. But its not all about the outer influence but more about the inner. Without believing in yourself and seeing results for yourself as a student the most positive environment will not get you to have a successful end result. So I agree with the vision in the book but in total see it a bit different. And gaining confident and thereby personal motivation is important from a young age. But gets even more important when they become teenagers.
I agree with the importants of finding out what our students attitudes are from time to time. As a teacher I can assume in big lines what they are but specially being a teacher in China this is even harder then normal because of the culture differents. I really like to know the positive and negative views of my students. I can only learn and grow from this knowledge. Without this information time to time updated the student and teacher can become distant instead of closer. I realized the concept but didn’t think about it in long term.
There are a lot of different types of students and with this a different approach of learning needed. All teachers will unconsciously divide our own students in specific types of learners. We can’t stop this. Which in the big lines is a good thing but we are also just humans and make wrong assuming sometimes. Becoming conscious of our own vision of our students will make us able to look at them from an outher perspective. And thereby a more honest vision which makes us able to correct our mistakes.
Connecting different types of learners is a good way to learn for both types. The students vision becomes bigger because of working together. The buddy system is a good example in which I personally have very good experience. But it only works with clear rules as said in chapter 3. The slower learners will learn new tricks from the faster ones. And the faster ones will learn from being able to explain their own process. The buddy system is a great tool to use in teaching with us teachers monitoring them to keep going in the right direction.
