Children have many ways to be motivated without much effort. Their minds are like crystal balls because they glow with excitement. They pretty much are interested in anything that we teach assuming that they can understand English or any subject and that the method is suitable to their tastes and abilities. In general, students as a group (3 to 10) are interested in English or any language because the games that are used to train them allow them to compete with each other even at the adult level if you plan carefully. People LOVE TO COMPETE!!!!!!!! For example, when I ride my bike I always hate when other people out cycle me on the street if I do not have excuse! I was in Xi’an 10 years ago and I and another boy were neck and neck on race bikes until we both gave up with a tie I think. We were quick. Same here. Give them reasons to compete. While doing that nevertheless, make sure that you, the teacher, are also actively having fun with them. It makes a difference with the kids. It makes you involved and relaxed.
What happens with a set of students that do not want to do anything as a group or class regardless what what is offered? Obviously the first idea that would come to mind would be that they do not like you. I had that before. No mater what I did one time in that class at “ABC” in Beijing they were just cold, rude and snotty 10 years olds after several lessons. All of the other classes that I had had no problem. If one meets a similar situation, it would be time to just swap the teacher which was done. So do not feel bad if you all have a similar misfortune. Not all will like an individual no matter what that person does or says.
In most cases however these situations need patience and time. Those of course will not be enough because either talent, games, etc as mentioned would also be needed. As the author Jane discusses in her book, ask why they do not like English or the games. One way is just asking what games they like or why they do not like. Why they do not like? Perhaps it is because they have already tried it. Maybe the expectations of the students towards the Chinese teacher are different than they are toward the foreigner even at very young ages. Having that concept in mind would stimulate the teachers to have better ideas to motivate their students. Merely asking them alone most likely will not do the trick as far as why English is itself is boring. For one, they might not know themselves and even if they did, most likely they would not be able to say much anyway. And still yet even if they did, one would have to really do a lot a experimentation in trial and error just to get something of a response, if any. So in my opinion, merely asking them as young learners is something to keep in mind but stimulating their minds by competing, playing and sometimes offer rewards is able to accomplish this goal by themselves. Rewards are self explanatory. So no need to elaborate on that one. I hope that i have proven by both writing this and from my experiences that I am decent yet caring teacher for all ages that is a good educator.
