If a student can't find motivation to practice during the class, my reactions could be:
-to adapt the activity to something more interesting for the student.
Example: Learning lines (straight line, zig zag, curved, etc.)
Materialize a line in 3d using a string to stretch like a straight line and say it together. (stretch the string and say straight line)
Moving the string in order to create curved line with the string.
Concerning zig zag, this word sounds funny and, for me, i think i can use the sound of this word in two parts and let the child draw on the white board the zig zag which can be divided in two parts.
Zig (line up) zag (line down)
So find some visual things and sounds, more attractive than just simple drawing and speaking learning.
-To make outdoor activities, parks, streets. Moving and discovering is a great activity for children, they often like exploring the world (we can learn a lot from their attitude in our adult's world with auto-control)
By this method, they may find an interest to speak. I think that physical movement is linked to speaking. The more we move, the more we want to express ourselves and are able to communicate.
They also had to speak louder if they want to be understood in the streets.
It could be hard for some students who aren't be familiarized with outdoor activities.
So move the body. Observe changes outside. Nature is a great environment for that because we are certainly connected with elements but we loose this relationship.
It's interesting to see how children but also adults could be more relaxed and be themselves in a natural place.
With our outdoor activities now, we can use this to find other ways to captive their attention.
-Focus on one thing they like to do.
Observe them, put different objects on the classroom, see what they want to use, start to play. Add some vocabulary.
Talking with parents could be useful to find their passion, interests to developp in a class.
Using sounds, videos and interaction with others, students or adult or fictive characters, natural elements, could be interesting to try.
Obviously, our attitude as teacher is one of the most important key for me. If I'm not patient or if i expect too much from them, I should change my attitude and adapt the way I have oriented my lesson. Always think that I have a responsability through this exchange. If a student loose attention, it could be in part my responsability. But I also have the chance to change the way.
