First of all, I agree with guys, for most of students it is an issue, and they just dont know why they study English. Everyday they can see their classmates at school, or, even, their peers and friends in the courtyard, who don't study English at all. They have more freetime and their life seems to be easier. They dont understand(yet) why their parents make them participate in this strange, absolutely incomprehensible proccess.
This situation is normal, and it is reasonable thoughts inside their heads in this period of time. Most of our students are too young, to make their own decisions or clearly understand why they do this, or another activity. Its only about uprising. Parents, and we - teachers, should show them their way and lead the toward right direction.
Again, I would like to devide students into two age groups(without particular age)
1. Young guys without conception how this world wags
As a teachers, we should just make them comfortable and interested. They should be involved in educational process, sometimes without particular understanding WHY.
It is our issue too read them, to feel student's mood and attitude. We should wisely choose activities and games, to improve their language, and what is more important - their desire to study in future. One of the way is to create interesting and catchy invironment. They should be as comfortable, as at home, and even more. Every time its should be insight for them(i+1 by Krashen). We porticipate in maturation process, and, of course, parents will do their job(hopely), and appropriate them skill of being hard-working. There is no such problem in China. They just do that.
2. Adolescents, who are already understand that education, especially in China is very important. Who could also have their own desires and dreams to travel, study in another country etc.
Now we are talking!) It's very important age, in which we actually can affect on them. I've already told this many times. Open communication - it is an answer, in my opinion.
Students are not stupid! They understand what is going on(mostly). They are more self-concious, self-motivated. They actually want something. In this case we can use veiled questionnares, or we can just speak with students and their parents privately.
For example
I used kind of modified task 2 with my student - Lucky(13 yo). She is etremly bright, and one time, 5 min to lesson end, I just couldn't restrain myself - I started to speak with her about her future. One of our previous topic was about Chinese education, and I knew that she wants to enter Beijing language(I dont remember exact name) University. She has never thought about going abroad. I said her, that she already has good level and right attitude(she is really nice and mature person for 13 yo girl), and I think she could even try to go abroad after school. Her face shone, and she asked me: -"Really? Do you think I really could?"
I advised her to talk with her parents, and if they possibly could cinsider such an option - we would start slow preparation. She was absolutely happy, but unfortunately I dont know her thoughts after conversation with parents because of "Jiazhou Crysis"
About task 5 and motivation in whole. Its just makes scence. I think that if every teacher could reach out to the student WHY we are doing this particular task or activity - educational process would be much more easier just as teacher, so too for students.
We can show them their FUTURE.
P.S. And of course I understand that it is not applicable to all students, and we can have an open conversations with only some of them. We should just feel them and feel situation. Should understand are they dependent(only teacher leads) or independent(they can do some stuff on their own. Always on their's thought) students, and work with them is that way, accoring to who they are and which character do they have.
