Career additional information
I became the Director at Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre in May 2014. Rainsbrook is a secure training establishment for young people who have committed criminal offences and are deemed by the courts to be socially at risk, the centre holds up to 89 young people who are expected to attend up to 30 hours education per week, including English, Maths, Social Skills and Sciences. The centre is run by G4S on behalf of the Youth Justice Board UK and is monitored by OFSTED.
I joined the Scottish Prison service as a basic grade prison officer in January 1998 and I left in November 2012 having been lucky enough to have worked in different establishments in Scotland, England and Australia.
I finished my career at HMP Kilmarnock which is a 500 cell high security category B prison with a maximum occupancy of 692 inmates and is the first PFI prison in Scotland. HMP Kilmarnock operates on an education and Industrial model where the prisoner population is required to undertake a minimum of 35 hours per week structured activity inclusive of work, education and offender outcome programs.
In addition to working at HMP Kilmarnock and as my career developed I was regularly seconded to other high security establishments including HMP Dovegate, HMP Lowdham Grange, HMP Thameside, HMP Doncaster and Colnbrook IRC. I also worked on the Serco pathfinder bid team.
MWT Holdings LTD
I was the Managing Director of my own business from 2012 until early 2014 an investments company which provided funding for new start-up businesses in return for a percentage share, the portfolio included four franchise companies and a travel company which was a fully owned subsidiary of the business.
SERCO Australia DIAC-ASPAC
In Australia I was appointed Director of Christmas Island immigration detention centre for eight months which at that time held more than 2960 detainees. This followed a period of time in a supporting role to Serco department of immigration and citizenship which included operational support to senior management positions in prisons, Immigration centres and detainee escorting functions throughout the country Including Acacia Prison In Perth, Borallon Prison in Brisbane and Darwin IDC.
During my career I have been a control and restraint instructor and the control and restraint co-ordinator for various establishments and have been involved at all levels of incident command up to and including operational support team leader, siege area coordinator and Silver Commander. I am fully versed in all aspects of incident command and I have a great understanding of security systems and procedures in a performance driven custodial environment. I have a proven track record working in senior positions and importantly have gained a wealth of experience working closely with various customers and stakeholders. I have gained ILM level 3 and CMI level 4. and various other qualifications related to the field.
British Army
I served in the British Army with various operational tours and was a Sergeant in B Coy, 6 Scots, Royal Highland Fusiliers, Royal Regiment of Scotland. The regiment is the longest Standing in the British Army with by far the highest number of Battle Honours of any regiment on earth, the original thin Red Line.
Family
I have two children, my daughter Caragh is finishing her final year in High school and my son Conner serves in the British Royal Navy on HMS Vanguard, trident nuclear submarine.
