I personally think that songs are a great way to incorporate Jayne Moon’s highlights, and songs can be used as an activity as well. For example, I use a song when I teach the days of the week. The students have to run or jump to the correct flashcard with the day written on it. They love this exercise. It’s important to use songs that use the target language of the lesson. With songs it’s possible to use ‘chunks’ of language, because kids will sing along the sentences such as ‘put your finger on your nose’ or ‘it’s a rainy day’. Most of my students love songs, so they have fun and join in the action and in a way they are talking their heads off, because even the little kids try to sing along. I have a three year old who doesn’t like to talk a lot, but she knows all the songs by heart and will sing along. Since songs are used quite often during class, it makes the kids feel at home as well. It’s part of the routine and songs can be repeated very often. Besides, songs can be incorporated in many different ways. For example, after presenting the target language, let the kids act out the song. Or do karaoke, so the students have to remember the key sentences or let them improvise with different vocabulary.

I love this idea of making sure the 'songs' we use in the classroom are linked to the TL of the class! Sometimes I find teachers use great songs, but they are of little value and scaffolding support to that particular class! Also I think its very important that we recognise the importance of using chunks of language, your right that kids will use the these chunks of language and occasionally change the vocabulary as time goes by! Some people believe students should understand and be able to use the constituent words of the lexical phrase before they use the phrase, however this is not true, chunks can be used firstly and later the students will naturally break down the chunks down and replace certain words to make new meanings. Again this songs provides a chance to manipulate and learn language in a way that is pleasurable and engaging!
