I've been giving a lot of thought lately to different activities and how to implement them in class. Carnival games came to mind. We all have sticky balls so here's a twist. There is a carnival game where you throw darts at a balloon. Inside the balloons are different points you can trade in for better prizes. In this game we keep the picture/word hidden and put the flash cards on the board face down. That way whatever the student hits with the dart/sticky ball is a surprise and they should then say the vocabulary word to get a point. As an added bonus you can create 1-2 cards with candy on them and if the student chooses that card they get a sweet treat for that turn.
Another would be like the horse race, we put numbered markers on the ground for instance 1-5 lined up. All the students form up at the first numbered marker. The teacher should have a stack of cards and take turn presenting them to the students. The first student that calls out the card correctly moves up a point. The winner is the first to 5 or whatever points.
We want the students to be so engrossed in the activity by encouraging them to play and have fun they forget to be shy or embarrassed.

Demon, I like this racing idea and especially the fact that you're giving the points for the correct answers. I play a similar game, but the students are standing on the sheets of newspaper which are their ships. The first one to call out the card correctly is safe; the others lose a "piece" of their ship. I must admit, the prospect of gaining points instead of losing something should be more motivating =)

I like the idea Demon I have been playing with the idea of activities around pinata, with similar points, prizes etc but the thought of paper mache and all the faf has been putting me off....I might just steal the idea with the balloons

I totally agree with Demon's idea, I think that a theme based class could result pretty successful, specially for ESL
