First of all, book is interesting, its written with simple language and I've already learned some things for myself. At least it makes you think and look deep into teaching proccess.
In my opinion, activities - one important part of study anything(not only English), especially for kids.
Inherently activities can be used for distraction from educational process, because drilling can be boring, and, what is more important - activities can be an imitation of real life and real situations.
It can be divided into two types of activities - gaming and situational.
Situational actions more useful for grown up students, it can be less interesting for a child but incredibly useful.
For example, my student Grace, who is 35 y.o, is very greatful when we do some interesting activities, when she can actually use material, which we've just learned.
We make a play. Action, whereever it possible. We were in a shop, where I was a cashier, we were in an airport and she had a conversation with policeman, she was trying to order a hotel room with receptionist, she even was a taxi driver, who explaned me how to get to...
I like the idea of "feeling at home". The main meaning here - is to make student feel relaxed and comfortable. Our aim is to create an enviorment, where the student would sincerely like to return. Those activities are key. Lessons should be informative, and interesting. Student should enjoy the process, not to think "I just have to".
Moreover, we should understand the personality of student and create those kinds of activities, which would be more interesting for that exact kid.
My student Bobby, really likes to draw. I understood that, because while a was filling his diary, he drow me vey cool ship battle on the whiteboard. So I asked his mother, and she confirmed that drawing is his hobby, and he does it constantly. So I started to use paintings during our lessons. I can ask him to drow me something, what we've just learned. And you should see his absolutely happy face. And this smile.. We are laughing during process of painting, and In 5 minutes he returns completely refreshed and ready to work.
Games can also easily increase efficiency of lesson. But we should wisely choose which kind of game and activity applicable for which group/student
