Young learners have very limited knowledge yet have a curious mind while paying no mind to the thoughts of their peers. With that, we would need to create an environments where the kids can not only actively absorb the lesson that is provided but also able to passively acquire/produce other information in an activity that can do both simultaneously. One such example would be going outside at a local block with many stores, eateries and so forth. The topic would be places and how to get there. We would have a map (maybe each student to have one each). We would reherrse the contents from the lesson.
Example: Where is the supermarket?
It is one the right of the post office
How do you go to the hospital?
You turn left/go west and then …..
We would have a leader of each place taking turns to guide the class including the teacher. Further, if they are stuck the other students would help them. They would really enjoy that and I would not help them other than asking questions.
If they are really good then we can improvise a situation. “I need to go to the police station because I lost my money, ID etc.” Then they would be pressured as if it were real life.
As we walk students can tell each other what they see, like or dislike. I would ask some questions and/or they could just volunteer speaking. They would be talking their heads off.
We could go to the candy store and tell me the cost or ask me the cost etc. No doubt that they would be entertained because they would like to express more than what the lesson would entail for sure if they are outside doing such an activity.
As they start to talk other shy students ,if any, would certainly join in even if it is not the lesson itself but they would at least say something in English with all this going around. Of course, it would be the teacher’s responsibility to prompt questions and encourage them if needed. Then they can talk my openly with their peers.
In whole thing would be using the language creatively when many aspects.
